For the 57th time, the Clinton Red Devils won over the Woodruff Wolverines, this time, 43-21, Friday at Wilder Stadium in a high school football series that started in 1923.
Angelo Cromer’s 152 yards, on 15 carries, pushed the senior running back over the 1,000-yard mark for the season and the 2,000-yard mark for his career.
That sets the stage for this Friday's home game, 7:30 p.m. Kickoff vs Liberty. If the Red Devils win, they advance to play Southside Christian (bye this week) on the road.
Tickets for the Liberty game will be sold at the gate ($10) and can be purchased online using the S2Pass app or at our athletics website - clintonreddevils.com.
Throughout the playoffs, ONLY SCHSL passes will be accepted. Everyone 6 years old and older must purchase a ticket!! Ticket prices are set by the SCHSL for the playoffs.
The Devil D limited Woodruff to just 75 yards running the ball on 25 attempts. Woodruff was successful just 3 times on 12 3rd down conversion chances.
Clinton, 6-4, awaited the result of a points system to see its placement in Region 2 AA and its destination in next Friday’s state playoffs opening round. Clinton broke a 2-season losing streak to Woodruff with the Senior Night home win. It’s Clinton’s 3rd win in a row, after a 3-game losing streak. This was Woodruff’s 5th loss in the last 6 games.
Clinton ran the ball 45 times to gain 431 yards against the Wolverines’ defense. In addition to Cromer’s 152, senior quarterback Owen Glenn ran for 95 yards on 8 carries.
Glenn started the Clinton scoring with a running touchdown, and Cam Croft added the 2-point conversion. Woodruff answering that touchdown with a scoring pass of its own.
Glenn’s 26-yard scoring run put the Red Devils up 14-6, but Woodruff answered with another scoring pass (the Wolverines threw for 219 yards). Clinton muffed the kickoff for the second time, and the fumble recovery gave the Wolverines the ball, at the Clinton 38, in a short-lived possession. Cromer’s interception took the ball right back for Clinton.
Cromer scored from 27 yards out, and Glenn added the 2-point conversion run. On Clinton’s first possession of the 2nd half, Graydon Watkins hauled in a 39-yard Glenn spiral, on a 4th and 16, for another Clinton score. Camden Gregory ran in the 2-point conversion.
That was a 6-play, 70-yard drive for Clinton, running the clock down to 9 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.
The quarter got even better for Clinton when Cam Croft snagged an interception, setting the ball at midfield; and Cromer again found paydirt for a 36-13 lead with 4 minutes left in the 3rd. Glenn ran in another score with 6:20 left to play.
In the pre-Halloween pregame, Clinton High Athletics honored the Red Devil Seniors, and CHS Athletics Director and football offensive coordinator Louie Alexander was acknowledged for his 350th high school football game.
At 8-2 overall, Southside Christian sits atop the Region 2 AA standings by virtue of a 28-10 win over Mountain View Prep, and a 4-0 region mark. Clinton, MVP and Chesnee are bunched up in the second through fourth spots in this Upstate region.
