Rewind the game on Sat. mornings

Saturday Morning Rewind has been delivering for 2 decades

Posted

I am one lucky sports writer. Because of the Large Time Network, I can cover the Clinton Red Devils from the comfort of my couch in the den - Jewel curled up beside me, and Pat working on paperwork for her on-line business but listening, nonetheless.

AND, I get to hear again from the head coach the next morning, after the win or loss has been digested and some adjustments can be thought out overnight. The Friday night “coverage” comes from the LIVE broadcast of Clinton Football on WPCC radio and worldwide on the web at largetime.net; and the Saturday morning supplement as a result of Saturday Morning Rewind. I’m there when it’s vitally important to be there - this coming Friday & Saturday, for instance - but with my bum left knee (dog-chasing mishap on the beach, it’s a long story) I do need a respite at times from walking the sidelines, and to and from parking lots. As a community journalist for the past 50 years, I can appreciate a Radio Show that has been on the air for the past 20 years.

Saturday Morning Rewind sometimes is my 2nd cup of coffee on the back porch, especially when the weather is brisk (as it was last Wednesday, 57 degrees! in August!). Buddy and the rest of The Wolfpack break down the previous night’s game - win, lose, or draw - and Coach Fountain is there with them usually as the very first segment. The Coach has a young family, so any demand on his time on a Saturday is really going above and beyond the Call of Duty. But he does it, because he loves it (and, frankly, he has a good radio voice). Gene adds color commentary from the perspective of a veteran Clinton athletics  viewer, and Coach Harold has forgotten more football than most people (certainly I) will ever know. Add to that College Football in the 2nd segment and spotlights on other Red Devil Sports and you have the makings of a tight, well-informed show emanating every Saturday morning as long as football season lasts from Whiteford’s on South Broad Street in Clinton - they are outdoors, except when there’s a monsoon and then they take it inside.

For the past 2 DECADES (a special thank you goes to Patman & Robin).

You know, it’s human nature to “not know what you’ve got til it’s gone” and that may happen someday to radio and, indeed, to newspapers. So, for right now, my advice to Clinton and the worldwide audience is: listen in to Saturday Morning Rewind; you don’t even have to do anything, except drink that second cup, and occasionally pet the pup.
