Raiders Raid the Devils' Den: Laurens Takes Down Clinton in Rivalry Showdown

Posted

Clinton, SC - The Clinton High School gymnasium was abuzz with excitement on Wednesday night as the Red Devils hosted their arch-rivals, the Laurens Raiders, in a series of highly anticipated basketball games.

Clinton's varsity boys' head coach, Dontavious Glenn, emphasized the importance of staying focused in rivalry games. "Our goal is to come out and play smart, handle each possession, and each quarter. We don't want to get too high or too low in our rivalry game."

The Raiders ultimately emerged victorious, taking two out of four games against the Red Devils.

The varsity boys' game was a closely contested matchup, with Laurens pulling away in the fourth quarter to secure a 69-57 win.

"We beat ourselves," said Clinton's #5 DJ Clark, a senior shooting guard. "We turned the ball over too many times and didn't play well enough to win."

The varsity girls' game was a nail-biter, with Laurens edging out Clinton by going into overtime and ending the night with a score of 42-39.

McKenzie Clark stated, "During the game, I felt very calm, but all the people in the gym really got me amped up. It was really intense at times, especially when they got close."

In the junior varsity games, Clinton's girls' team emerged victorious with a 28-14 win over Laurens. The Red Devils' defense was strong, holding Laurens to just 14 points. Clinton's win was a testament to the team's hard work and dedication. The boys' team also secured a 32-21 win, which was a great confidence booster for the team.

The atmosphere in the CHS gymnasium was electric, with the student section creating a loud and intense environment.

"The energy was very intense," said CHS cheerleader Maggie Cook. "As a cheerleader, it made cheering at the game more exciting and competitive."

Laurens' varsity boys' head coach, Coach Armond Flood, was pleased with his team's performance. "Our goal was to win, and we did that. We played team basketball and established our defense."

The Red Devils will look to bounce back from Friday's losses when they host their next opponent, Eau Claire, on January 21st at 6:00 p.m.
