Blue Hose Surge Into First Place After Two Rounds at the Big South Championship

FRIPP ISLAND – The Presbyterian Blue Hose surged into first place after two rounds at the Big South Championship at the Ocean Island Golf Club in Fripp Island, South Carolina, on Monday afternoon.

Presbyterian shot a second round 284 (E). The Blue Hose are the only team under par after two rounds with a score of 566 (-2). High Point is in second place with a two-round score of  571 (+3).

Sophomore Jeep Patrick is currently tied for third place with a two-round score of 139 (-3) to pace the Blue Hose. Patrick is two strokes back from the leaders heading into Wednesday's final round of stroke play after shooting a second round of 69.

NOTABLES

  • Patrick had five birdies and 11 pars on his round of 69.
  • Junior Spence Hagood and freshman James Rhodes are tied for sixth place with two-round scores of  141 (-1). Hagood began his second round with an eagle on the 510-yard par 5 first hole. On his round of 71 (E), he had one eagle, two birdies, and 11 pars. Rhodes shot a second round of 72 (+1) with three birdies and 11 pars on the round.
  • Sophomore Richard Anaclerio is tied for 24th place after two rounds with a score of 147 (+5). On his second round of 74 (+3), he had three birdies and 11 pars, including a bogey-free final 10 holes.
  • Sophomore Gage Gaskins recorded a second round score of 72 (+1) with five birdies and eight pars on his round. Gaskins is tied for 35th place with a two-round score of 150 (+8).

FRIPP ISLAND – The Presbyterian Blue Hose won the Big South Championship after defeating High Point in the semifinals (3-2) and USC Upstate (3-2) in the finals to win the program’s first Big South title. Junior Spence Hagood won both clinching matches.

The Blue Hose have earned the Big South automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Tournament field will be announced on Wednesday, May 6, at 2 p.m. on the Golf Channel.

MATCH PLAY FINALS

Presbyterian won the program’s first Big South title, beating USC Upstate, 3-2, in the finals. Presbyterian’s James Rhodes put the first point on the board, winning his match, 6 & 5. USC Upstate tied the score at one, winning 6 & 5 in the second match. The Blue Hose took a 2-1 lead after Jeep Patrick won his match, 3 & 1. USC Upstate tied the match at two. Then, Presbyterian’s Hagood clinched the title for the Blue Hose by winning on the 20th hole (the second hole of the playoff).

SEMIFINALS

Presbyterian advanced to the Championship match after topping High Point, 3-2, in the semifinals. High Point put the first two points on the board. Then, Presbyterian’s Jeep Patrick took the lead on the third hole and would not relinquish it, winning his match 3 & 1. Presbyterian’s Richard Anaclerio tied the score at two, winning his match, 2& 1, after taking a lead after the first hole. Presbyterian’s Spence Hagood sent the Blue Hose to the Championship match after winning his match, which he led from the second hole, eventually winning 1UP.

Big South Champs Clean Up League Awards: Patrick Named Player of the Year, Addison Coach of the Year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Presbyterian Blue Hose men’s golfers sophomore Jeep Patrick, junior Spence Hagood, and head coach Thomas Addison garnered All-Big South accolades, as announced by the league office on Thursday morning. Patrick was named Big South Player of the Year as well as a First Team All-Big South honoree. Hagood earned a spot on the league’s All-Academic team. Coach Addison was named Big South Coach of the Year after guiding the Blue Hose to the Big South Championship.  

Patrick and Hagood played major roles in helping the Blue Hose capture the program’s first Big South Championship.

JEEP PATRICK 

Big South Player of the Year, First Team All-Big South

Patrick is the first Presbyterian player to be named Big South Player of the Year. He is the first Blue Hose men’s golfer named Conference Player of the Year since former Blue Hose standout Hugh Morrison earned the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year award in 2007. Last season, Patrick was the Big South Freshman of the Year and a Second Team All-Big South selection.

The Hilton Head, South Carolina native claimed the Big South Player of the Week award three times (November 5, February 19, and April 9) this season. Patrick won the Fripp Island Intercollegiate title   in early November. He averages 71.2 strokes per round while recording 11 rounds of 70 or lower this year. Patrick recorded two match play wins in the Big South Championship.

THOMAS ADDISON 

Big South Coach of the Year

Addison was named Coach of the Year after helping lead the Blue Hose to the program’s first Big South Championship. Addison, who is in his 21st season as his alma mater’s head coach, earned his first Big South Coach of the Year award. Addison’s father, Tommy Addison, was a longtime coach of the Presbyterian men’s golf program. While he was coach, Tommy Addison was a five-time South Atlantic Coach of the Year (1996, 1997, 2001, 2005, and 2007). 

SPENCE HAGOOD 

Big South All-Academic Team

Hagood has been a mainstay in Presbyterian’s lineup over the last three years. This season, he averages 73.9 strokes per round while recording three rounds of 70 or lower. He posted two top 20 finishes, including finishing 10th in the Big South Championship stroke play. Hagood recorded the match-clinching victory in both of Presbyterian’s match play wins on the way to the Big South Championship.

The Greenwood, South Carolina, native has a 3.44 GPA, majoring in Business Administration. Last summer, he was named a GCAA All-American Scholar.
