Memorial Day 2024 at the former American Legion Hut, now the School District 56 Conference Center

Some gave all. -- Army CW4 (Ret) Mike Dunkin, of Clinton, right, accepts a slow salute fromAmerican Legion Post 56 Historian Burt Harter during a Memorial Day Observance on Monday morning at the School District 56 Conference Center (the former American Legion Hut). Dunkin spoke about his son, SSgt Shawn Dunkin (Feb. 27, 1981, - Feb. 19, 2007), who died in service to his nation while serving the United States Army stationed in Iraq. While deployed to Iraq from Fort Drum, New York, he and his fellow soldiers suffered severe wounds when their vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device. Shawn and his two battle buddies all perished from their wounds in Baghdad, Iraq. Guest speaker for the observance was COL (R) Bill Goodwin, USAF. Clinton High JROTC standout members and Post 56 delegates to Palmetto Boys State and Palmetto Girls State also were recognized.
