The Laurens County Coroner’s Office released this statement related to a homicide in Waterloo: “Per Patti Canupp, On April 10, 2026, shortly before 9:00 PM, Chief Deputy Coroner Ashley Rushton was notified of a death that occurred in the 3000 area of Todd Quarter Rd in Waterloo, SC in reference to a shooting victim. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. The deceased has been identified as 27-year-old male, Kevin Fortner of Waterloo, South Carolina.
“A forensic autopsy was conducted. The cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound, and the manner of death has been ruled a homicide. This incident is currently under investigation by the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Laurens County Coroner’s Office. No additional details are available at this time.”
The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office stated that a suspect, Maurice Marquis Suber, 48, was taken into custody, after being wanted for murder. He was arrested April 12, a Laurens County Sheriff’s Office post said, after being seen driving a white 2011 Buick Enclave. Jail records indicate he is being held without bond.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in a court of law.
