Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Biggs has introduced H.R. 5934, the Major Thomas D. Howie Congressional Gold Medal Act, to posthumously award one of the nation’s highest civilian honors to Major Thomas D. Howie – a native of Abbeville, South Carolina, and a graduate of The Citadel – for his extraordinary courage and leadership during the Battle of Normandy.
Often remembered as “The Major of St. Lo,” Major Howie’s heroism and ultimate sacrifice helped lead American forces to a critical victory during World War II. His legacy continues to inspire generations of service members and patriots.
“This Veterans Day, we honor every man and woman who’s worn the uniform; especially the proud veterans of South Carolina’s Third District,” said Congresswoman Sheri Biggs. “Major Howie’s bravery at Normandy reflects the very best of them. This medal is a tribute to his sacrifice and to all who’ve served.”
About Major Howie
Major Howie was killed in action on July 17, 1944, while leading his battalion during the fierce battle to liberate Saint-Lô, France. His men, determined to see him honored, carried his body into the newly liberated city so he could be remembered as he lived, leading from the front. His leadership not only helped change the tide of battle but continues to stand out as a powerful symbol of American valor.
His story has been honored across the globe, from memorials in Saint-Lô and plaques in South Carolina to being featured in the acclaimed film Saving Private Ryan.
