Classical
Everything classic is meant to be taught, passed along, and integrated to the canon of tradition due to its fundamental value. A classic book is atemporal, it contains truths that do not decay. It is always fresh because it is based on what is meaningful, not expedient. Classical music is the same. It never gets old. It is not frozen in time but quite the opposite, it is so true, good, and beautiful that it is fully alive! It does not die of its universal value, which goes beyond time, culture, and location. You can listen to Beethoven’s Eroica over and over again and it always has something new to communicate. Of course, I am talking about classics of classical music. And the concert we bring to you tonight is full of them! The PC String Quintet opens with Haydn, the Father of the Classical period (1750–1815), and Mendelssohn, a composer of the late Classical period. Both selections are intimate and inviting, perfect to open our musical evening. Waltz No. 2 is Shostakovich’s classic example of musical irony. Corelli’s Concerto Grosso Op. 6, No. 8 was written for Christmas but its classicality conquered concert programs throughout the year. This is a classic representative of the Italian baroque style. Our student soloist, Lauren Smoak, takes the stage with the famous Accolay’s Violin Concerto in one movement. The program closes with W.A. Mozart’s Divertimento in D Major. The perfect balance of the Classical period opened and now closes the concert. Classics of classical music from the Classical period… It can’t get any classier than that!
