Pearl Ellen Wood Swygert

JOANNA - Pearl Ellen Wood Swygert, age 100, widow of Perry Lee Swygert, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 17, 2026 at Hospice of Laurens County. 

   She was born in Canton, North Carolina on October 16, 1925 and was the daughter of the late Edward Wood and Hermie Coats Wood. 

   Pearl retired from Greenwood Mills and was a faithful member of Community Baptist Church. She was also involved in the Foster Grandparent Program at Joanna Woodson Elementary School. She was affectionately known at “Nannie Pearl”. 

   Pearl is survived by her son: Don Swygert (Linda) of Joanna; her grandchildren, Michelle Aldridge (Jason), Amy Burns (Billy); her great-grandchildren, Katelyn Ficklin (Adam), Erica Gilliam (Kendall), Megan Davis (John), Gabrielle Turner (Austin), Mason Burns; her great-great-grandchildren, Elijah Ficklin, Raeah Gilliam, Caleb Gilliam, Adalyn Ficklin, Izabella Gilliam, Kashton Turner. 

   In addition to her parents and her husband, Pearl is preceded in death by her son; Terry Franklin Swygert, her grandchildren, Christopher Swygert, Michael Swygert; her brother, William Edward Wood; her sister, Dorothy Wood Stone. 

   Funeral Services will be held Monday, July 20, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Community Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Owens and Rev. Kendall Gilliam officiating. The family will greet friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM prior to the service at the Church. Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry, South Carolina.
