REVOKED BAIL FOR ILLEGAL MAN CHARGE WITH RECKLESS HOMICIDE Wednesday, October 18, 2023

There was a bond hearing today under Judge Addy at General Sessions Court at Hillcrest Square for Gabriel Artega, who was arrested on the charge of reckless homicide which resulted in the death of three-year-old Madison Ann Hines on October eighth.

Bail had originally been set at $50,000, but this hearing was at the request of the solicitor, who wanted to have bail revoked, when it was determined that Artega is in this county illegally.

Judge Addy told the court that he was notified that I.C.E. was preparing to come for Artega, so he granted the solicitor request to revoke bail, so Artega would then be available to stand trial.

A Spartanburg man was arrested last Monday and charged in connection with the death of 3-year-old Madison A. Hines in a crash on US 76 at Chestnut Ridge Road last Sunday afternoon just after 4 p.m., according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Gabriel Arteaga was charged with driving without a license-second offense and reckless homicide caused by injury from vehicle. He is currently being held in the Laurens County Detention Center (as of Oct. 10). A 2008 Chevrolet pickup was traveling north on Chestnut Ridge Road when the driver failed to yield right of way at a stop sign and struck a 2020 Cadillac SUV in the side that was traveling east on US 76, said SCHP Master Trooper Gary Miller. The driver of the pickup was injured and transported by EMS to an area hospital. The passenger in the pickup was not injured.

The driver of the Cadillac SUV and two passengers were injured and transported by EMS to Greenville Memorial Hospital. One passenger, a child, died in the crash. The child was in the right rear seat, said Miller. — golaurens.com

State Representative Stewart Jones posted to Facebook Oct. 11: “Words cannot describe the pain which our family and community has felt from the loss of our sweet baby, Madison Hines who was killed when an illegal (with multiple prior charges, convictions, and deportations) ran into their vehicle on Sunday. Maddie would have turned 4 this Saturday. ... The family sustained multiple injuries and are still in the hospital recovering. I am asking for you to donate to help pay their medical expenses and other needs. Please continue to pray for strength. We will get #JusticeforMaddie.” Her funeral was Saturday -- on her 4th Birthday.
