Where leaders are made.

Eastside Elementary School brought a Leader in Me briefing to the District 56 Board of Trustees at their March 23 meeting.

The board hears from schools at each of its monthly meetings on the fourth Monday of each month. This past Monday it was Eastside’s turning during the regular session held at the district’s Conference Center (the former American Legion Hut in Clinton).

The school conducted its 4th Annual Leadership Day earlier this month - lots of photos are on the Eastside Elementary PTO Facebook page. The School Improvement Council’s “Leader In Me 7 Habits Family Worshop” kicked off March 30, and continues with sessions on April 27 and May 18, 5 - 7 p.m. at the school. Families were asked to commit to attending all 3 sessions, and dinner and childcare is provided. Third graders from Eastside, as well as District 56 and 55 schools, Thornwell Charter and Laurens Academy, will participate in Team Ecology, an environmental awareness program, today (April 1) at the Joe Adair Outdoor Learning Center in Laurens (Spring Break for District 56 schools is April 6 - 10).

As part of its meeting, the board also received the year-to-date financial information, considered setting a board workshop related to next year’s budget, and received a projects update.

Board members heard about a recent presentation to the Clinton City Council related to capacity in the city schools (as it relates to continued residential development).

The Laurens Preparatory Academy and Success Academy presentations were made at this board meeting. Also, the board considered final reading of a policy related to the naming of schools and school buildings. Per the policy, schools on a campus will not be named for a living person; school buildings or athletic facilities can be named for an individual, living or deceased. Minutes from the February 23 meeting indicate the board approved the issuing of 2 induction contracts, 1 continuing contract, and 18 administrative contracts for 2026-27.

The next meetings of the District 56 Board of Trustees will be April 27 and May 18, 7:30 p.m. in the District Conference Center. The Board arrives at 6:15 p.m. to consider matters proposed for closed session (personnel, contracts and student discipline). Each meeting includes an Audience Participation time (3 minutes per participant), in accordance with district policy.
