SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB) marked its historic 175th anniversary with a celebration rich in heritage, pride, and athletic achievement - highlighted by the induction of Clinton Native, Wayland Moon as the school's 98th member of the SCSDB Hall of Fame.
Moon, a 1970s-era standout known for his extraordinary versatility in football, track and field, and wrestling, earned the honor for both his competitive excellence and his trailblazing spirit that inspired generations of student-athletes at SCSDB. A Champion Across the Board A natural competitor, Moon shined on the football field as a powerful lineman and on the wrestling mat as one of the school's earliest state champions. But it was in track and field, particularly the shot put, that he achieved international recognition.
In 1981, with the help of the Clinton community and Presbyterian College students, funds were raised to send Moon to Cologne, West Germany, to represent the United States at the World Games for the Deaf (Deaflympics). There, he competed against the world's best and proudly earned 5th place in shot put, a moment that became a point of pride not only for SCSDB but for all of South Carolina. Community Effort, Lifelong Impact
The story of how the community rallied around Moon remains one of SCSDB's most cherished memories. Students at Presbyterian College organized fundraisers that brought in $4,000 to make his Olympic dream possible. The Clinton Chronicle documented his journey in 1981, capturing the spirit of a town united in support of"It wasn't just about sending an athlete to Germany, " said one alumnus. "It was about showing that talent, heart, and determination can break barriers — no matter the odds. " A Legacy of Strength and Spirit
Now, more than four decades later, Wayland Moon's induction into the Hall of Fame celebrates not only his victories but his example of perseverance, teamwork, and community. "SCSDB has a long legacy of excellence, and Wayland Moon represents the best of that tradition, " said school officials during the ceremony. "His accomplishments remind us that champions aren't defined solely by medals - but by the hearts they inspire. " Wayland Moon's name now joins nearly a century's worth of legends on the SCSDB Hall of Fame wall — a fitting tribute to an athlete, pioneer, and role model whose journey from Spartanburg to the world stage continues to echo with pride.
