SLED STATEMENT: Following a vehicle chase last night into the early morning between the Chief of the Springfield Police Department and an armed female subject, the police chief was injured.
The chase started in Orangeburg County and continued into Barnwell.
During the incident, the armed woman shot into the vehicle occupied by the police chief.
A South Carolina Blue Alert was issued as the search continued for the woman, identified as Lacey Nicole Cushman, 37.
Cushman was located in Orangeburg County early this morning. She was taken into custody, and the Blue Alert was canceled.
SLED was requested to investigate the incident by the Barnwell County Sheriff’s Office. SLED’s investigation is active and ongoing at this time.

SLED CHARGES ORANGEBURG COUNTY WOMAN WITH
ATTEMPTED MURDER AND OTHER CRIMES FOLLOWING BLUE ALERT
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) charged Lacey Nicole Cushman, 37, with Failure to Stop For a Blue Light – 1st Offense, Attempted Murder, Assault & Battery of a High and Aggravated Nature, Pointing and Presenting Firearms at a Person, Possession of a Firearm During Commission of a Violent Crime, Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person Convicted of Certain Crimes – 1st Offense, on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. The SLED investigation was requested by the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Cushman was booked into the Barnwell County Detention Center.
The case will be prosecuted by the 2nd Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
