Vic's View: PC women's basketball takes the bold move to renew the rivalry

Posted

Well, who would have ever thought it? Women leading the way.

The origin of that obviously sexist statement is the fact that I was AMAZED last Thursday when I opened  an article on the PC Athletics website and saw that - to my utter amazement - the PC women’s basketball team is going to play Newberry.

The College that I, and others, have been suggesting their Football team should play - and did play for many, many (many, many) years. Some of the best competition that the Blue Hose EVER played, in any sport.

And, now, Women’s Basketball, under a new coaching staff, is leading the way in (hopefully) reviving the PC-NC rivalry. Just a note, ladies, when the men used to play each other, they really, really didn’t like each other (it’s a long story).

This is the article that spiked my hope:

CLINTON, S.C. – Under the direction of first-year head coach Tiffany Sardin, Presbyterian College women’s basketball has released the 2024-25 non-conference schedule on Thursday.

The Blue Hose will tip off their season with three consecutive road games in early November. They begin with a season opener at Charlotte on November 4, followed by a matchup against South Carolina State on November 8. The team will then make a short trip to face ACC opponent Clemson for a game on November 11.

Presbyterian will host their home opener on November 14, welcoming UNC Wilmington to Clinton. The Blue Hose will then stay at home for a clash with Western Carolina on November 22. The team will finish November on the road, starting with a game at (A-10) Davidson on November 24, and then traveling to Tennessee for a contest against ETSU on November 27.

As December rolls in, Presbyterian will host Queens on December 2 before heading to North Carolina Central on the 11. The team will then host Coastal Carolina on December 15.

One of the highlights of the non-conference schedule is the Blue Hose’s trip to Puerto Rico, where they will compete in the Puerto Rico Clasico Tournament from December 16-20, to take on Montana State (Dec. 19) and Morgan State (TBD).

The Blue Hose will wrap up their non-conference slate with a New Year’s Eve game at home against Newberry College, setting the stage for the start of Big South Conference play in 2025. Fans will soon have the opportunity to purchase season tickets. More information will be released in the coming weeks.

NEW YEAR’S EVE. The final day of 2024 - the gateway to 2025. At Templeton. Blue Hose vs Wolves — each program with lots and lots of history. PC Women, coming off last season’s first-ever-for-PC trip to the NCAA Division I National Championship Tournament. Coming off that success the coach gets a new job and, of course, some players depart, as with any change. Then the new coach puts her stamp on the program - all indications are the Blue Hose are going to be very competitive. I’ve lost touch with Newberry women’s basketball since Peggy Barnes isn’t the coach, but that’s just life - interests come and go. I have no reason to think the Wolves will not come in ready and hungry to play - it’s probably the final game for them before South Atlantic Conference play, and likely one of their goals is a conference championship and Division II tournament nod. I’m sure the game won’t “harken back” to the rivalry that I - and many others - fondly remember, but that’s OK.

Colleges 20 miles apart should play each other.

Hear me plainly, you Men coaches.

Colleges 20 miles apart should play each other(!)
