PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE TO CELEBRATE HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Presbyterian College will celebrate the contributions of Hispanic culture and history to campus and beyond with a series of Hispanic Heritage Month events, Sept. 18-Oct. 10.
Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off with a celebratory gathering from 2-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in the Springs Campus Center Great Room, followed by the annual Hispanic Heritage Month Convocation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, in Edmunds Hall.
This year’s keynote speaker is Saul Flores, a nationally-recognized philanthropist, photojournalist, and speaker best known for his social impact projects. Flores’ presentation, “The Walk,” chronicles his three-month, 5,328-mile journey from Ecuador to Charlotte, N.C., in 2010 to document the arduous journey of immigrant families to the United States.
Flores’ efforts sparked a three-year labor of love to raise money for the reconstruction of an elementary school serving 134 students in his mother’s hometown of Atencingo, Mexico.
Flores’ work has been featured on National Public Radio, MSNBC, TEDX, and he has been an inspirational guest speaker at dozens of universities.
On Thursday, Oct. 3, Spanish professor Dr. Mark Cox will lead discussion following a Movie Night presentation at 6 p.m. in Kuhne Auditorium.
PC’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month will conclude with Cumbia lessons from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, in Springs Great Room. Cumbia is a musical rhythm and traditional folk dance that originated in Colombia and has elements of American Indigenous, African, and Spanish cultures.
