6TH IN THE NATION PC Women's Wrestling has honor of 1st pitch at Blue Hose Softball dramatic win over Wofford

Posted

History repeated itself for the Presbyterian College softball team and sophomore Kasey Wolfe on Wednesday night, as the Spartanburg native walked off the Wofford Terries to give PC their second straight win by a 2-1 margin.

It’s the exact same manner how Wolfe and the Blue Hose defeated Wofford 12 months ago (with that one being another walk-off single, only in eight innings as opposed to seven). She was responsible for both the game-tying run and the game-winner as Presby continues to have the Terriers’ number.

Carrying the momentum from a 2-to-1 series victory over Big South powerhouse USC Upstate last weekend, Wolfe’s heroics lifted the Scotsmen to their 17th win of the campaign.

Head coach David Williams’ bullpen was again ultra-clutch in the W, as starter Peyton Duncan struck out nine in six innings. She and Wolfe (who closed out the contest) limited the Terriers to zero runs over the last six frames, déjà vu to how they ended the series with Upstate in Game 3.

Presby picked a dramatic method to finish their seven-game homestand, returning to league action this weekend by visiting Charleston Southern. They’ll battle the Buccaneers for a 5:00 start on Friday, which precedes a 1:00 doubleheader on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Akin to the Game 3 result over Upstate – which saw every run of the day scored in the very first inning – the offense was hard to come by for both clubs. That is, unless Wolfe was situated at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3.

- She brought home Audrey Burton in the bottom of the 5th to tie things up at one all, and would later repeat that play with the game hanging in the balance. Baxleigh Arnette was the beneficiary to Wolfe’s walk-off, sitting on 2nd thanks to a base hit and sacrifice bunt.

- It was a bullet straight up the middle, sailing by Wofford pitcher Margaret Axelson. The throw from centerfielder Abbi Campbell was just a hair too late, meaning that both all-time meetings between PC and Wofford have had a practically identical climax.

- Duncan’s nine K’s are the second-most in a career that keeps ticking upward (one away from a personal-best 10 against South Carolina State last spring), allowing only five hits out of 29 at-bats. She has conceded just three home runs all year, facing a team-high 338 batters since February.

- Burton and junior Morgan Farthing went 4-of-6 in the batter’s box between them, helping the Blue Hose out-hit the Terriers by four as a unit. After no hits in the opening stanza, PC mustered at least one in every inning afterward.

UP NEXT

- Presbyterian visits CSU this weekend for their second conference encounter, squaring off against an opponent who goes into the series with a four-game losing skid.

  • Following a 4-3 Game One victory from the Blue Hose against the Bucs last season, Charleston Southern was able to recover and win the next two outings by three runs apiece.
  • PC Softball's final home games of the season will be April 12-13 vs Gardner-Webb and May 2-23 vs Radford - the Big South Tournament will be May 7-10.

WRESTLING

MANHEIM, Pa. – Less than a week after the Presbyterian College women's wrestling program achieved its highest-ever National Championship Tournament finish by claiming sixth-place, another school record was snared on Thursday afternoon with 16 PC student-athletes on the NWCA Scholar All-America list.

  • Qualify for the National Championship bracket while holding at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA

Each of the following Blue Hose wrestlers met at least one of the above criteria, proving the program's academic aptitude is just as strong as their mettle on the mats:

Chiara Barbieri (Sr.) – French

Ella Beam (Sr.) – Religion

May Cuyler (Fr.) – Psychology

Kassey Daugherty (Fr.) – Biology

Ashley Diaz (Fr.) – Undecided

PC's 16 Scholar All-Americans are the second-most of any institution in America, trailing only North Central's 22. The Blue Hose captured the Southeast Regional Championship last month for the first time, while head coach Brian Vutianitis was labeled the Region Coach of the Year.

Presbyterian has finished inside the National top ten in each of the last three seasons, rising up the ladder every spring to sixth-place in 2025. Six competitors came in the top eight for their respective weight class, highlighted by Giangeruso who placed 4th.

CORALVILLE, Iowa – The Presbyterian College women's wrestling team finished off a marvelous 2025 season on Saturday night with eight of their 14 qualifiers advancing to the top 12 of the NCWWC National Championships. When the dust cleared, PC garnered a school-record six All-Americans and a sixth-place team ranking (the program's highest in history).

After claiming the Southeast Region title for the first time two weeks ago, the Blue Hose sent three wrestlers to the National Semifinals in Iowa and found their highest-ranking placer in true freshman Carina Giangeruso who nabbed 4th.

Regional Coach of the Year Brian Vutianitis has directed his squad to a school record in three consecutive seasons at this tournament (which encompassed 61 other institutions), climbing from 9th place in 2023 to 8th in 2024 and now a 6th-place finish on the grandest stage this year.

Carina Giangeruso (138) – 4th Place, All-American

Paige Wehrmeister (138) – 6th Place, All-American

Maddie Kubicki (145) – 6th Place, All-American

May Cuyler (160) – 6th Place, All-American

Maria Aiono (207) – 6th Place, All-American

Alyssa Mahan (124) – 8th Place, All-American

Chloe Dearwester (110) – Day 2 Advancer

Henlee Haynes (180) – Day 2 Advancer

AMONG THE COUNTRY'S ELITE

  • Of PC's six All-Americans, two of them received that distinction for the second time in their career. Kubicki is the first Blue Hose in the Vutianitis era to win All-America status in back-to-back seasons, while Wehrmeister gets the honor for the second time in three years after sitting out last March due to injury.
  • - Three Presbyterian grapplers gained an All-America accolade as freshmen on Saturday (Aiono, Cuyler, and Giangeruso), meaning that seven total PC athletes have earned All-America plaudits as rookies since 2023.

- Going the furthest of the 14 qualifiers that made it to Coralville, Giangeruso concludes her debut year in a Blue Hose singlet with an individual record of 33-5.

- Coach Vutianitis' program continues its ranking among the country's best, steadily rising up the ladder with each year and has been rewarded with its highest team finish at Nationals that they've ever witnessed.
