CLINTON, S.C. – On Tuesday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m., sounds of brass, wind, and percussion instruments could be heard from Broad Street as the PC Jazz Band prepared for the rhythmic explosion of Latin jazz. Soon, the hip-swaying music of great composers like Dizzy Gillespie, Pérez Prado, and Tito Puente would fill Belk Auditorium, drawing the audience into a world of infectious grooves and vibrant melodies. As the first notes rang out, the auditorium was instantly transformed into a celebration of Latin rhythm, soul, and spirit.
Under the direction of Dr. Giovani Briguente, the Presbyterian College Jazz Band delivered a high-energy, crowd-pleasing performance that showcased both technical brilliance and musical joy. The night’s dynamic lineup included Latin jazz standards like “La Cucaracha,” “Oye Como Va,” “Mas Que Nada,” and more, each piece serving as a testament to the band’s versatility and passion for the genre.
Dr. Briguente, known for pushing musical boundaries at PC, reflected on the journey leading to this performance: “Last December we performed ‘Funk Time,’ an infusion of funk and jazz. Now, it is time to go beyond and dive into Latin jazz songs and dances.” And that’s exactly what they did—immersing the audience in a colorful soundscape of rhythm, improvisation, and cultural expression.
The ensemble demonstrated exceptional skill throughout the night. Alan Turner kept the rhythm grounded with smooth and soulful bass lines. Kerri Gearheart added brilliance to the piano, dancing across the keys with grace and complexity. Guy Tumblin’s bold trombone solos echoed with excitement, and drummer Jack Thompson—delivering one of the evening’s standout performances—drove the momentum forward with dazzling energy and masterful control.
A major highlight came during the lively number “Bien Sabroso,” when vocalist C.J. Davis took the spotlight. Davis returned later in the concert for a passionate rendition of “Mas Que Nada,” performing both songs in a language not native to him. His powerful voice and heartfelt delivery brought a unique and memorable edge to the show, earning loud applause from the audience. In the midst of the performance, excited audience members shouted “Oh yeah!” and “Alright!” in pure appreciation of the musical energy unfolding before them.
This concert was more than just an evening of great music—it was a cultural journey and a celebration of rhythm, soul, and the universal language of jazz. Once again, Dr. Giovanni Briguente led the Presbyterian College Jazz Band in an extraordinary performance, leaving the audience buzzing with excitement and appreciation for the music’s power to connect, move, and inspire.
The next concert in the PC music series will be “Resolute,” featuring the Presbyterian College Orchestra and String Quintet on Thursday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. in Edmunds Hall. Admission is FREE and all are welcome to attend.
