Presbyterian College Athletics
Despite trailing by 18 points in the third quarter, the Presbyterian College women's basketball team (3-13, 1-2) took down the USC Upstate Spartans (3-12, 0-2), 59-58, in Templeton Center on Wednesday night behind a huge fourth quarter run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Despite a pair of stepback jumpers from Paige Kindseth early in the game, USC Upstate took a quick 12-4 lead and forced Presbyterian to use their first timeout. Kindseth struck again to end the opponent's streak, this time with a three-pointer in the corner. Once again, Kindseth's name was called as she scored her ninth point, the only Blue Hose player to score so far. Shelby Fiddler hit her first attempt from outside the arc, cutting PC's deficit to 14-12. The Spartans didn't let up as the score was pushed to 20-13 before the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter
The Spartans extended their lead to 23-14 before Ashley Carrillo hit a three. Upstate answered with a three of their own, but Kishyah Anderson drew a foul and sank both of her free throws. The opponents were able to score five of the next six field goals, bringing their cushion to 37-21 at the end of the first half.
Third Quarter
An even start to the third quarter saw Carrillo start to heat up as she knocked down a triple and added a jumper in the paint. However, the Spartans kept the quarter even, pushing the score to 46-32. USC Upstate finished the quarter with six of the last nine points, extending their lead to 52-35.
Fourth Quarter
Kindseth opened the final 10 minutes of play with a layup before Aminata Tal followed up with one of her own. After a layup from the other side, Laney Scoggins added to the Blue Hose's tally with her first bucket of the night. Tal followed up with a fast break layup, sending us to the media timeout with Upstate leading 54-43. The Blue Hose continued to add to their fourth quarter surge, accumulating a 13-2 run behind a big three-pointer from Carrillo. Presbyterian was down 54-48 with 2:45 remaining in regulation when the opponents came up with a three-point play. Carrillo answered with a three-point play of her own, keeping it a six-point game. Anderson's layup cut PC's deficit to 57-53 before Presby called a timeout with 30.6 seconds to go. Anderson struck again with just over 20 seconds remaining to make it a two-point game. With the clock running out Kindseth came up with a huge steal before drawing a foul. With three seconds on the board, Kindseth sank both of her free throws, helping the Blue Hose secure a 59-58 victory.
