“The Day It Rained Militia” Lecture at the Laurens County Museum June 11

Laurens - Charleston fell and the darkest days of British oppression began.  But, after beginning horribly, the South Carolina Patriot Militia evolved to become a successful fighting force under the leadership of Thomas Sumter and Francis Marion, among others.

Durant Ashmore will discuss the book “The Day It Rained Militia” by Michael Scoggins about the success of the militia on Tuesday, June 11, at 7:00 pm, at the Laurens County Museum located at 116 South Public Square, Laurens, SC.  The public is invited to attend.  There is no fee for Laurens County Museum members or students.  There is a suggested donation of $5 for non-members to help support the museum.

During the weeks after May 12, 1780, when Charleston surrendered to the British, South Carolina experienced the full weight of the king’s punishment. Resistance was scattered and unorganized, but slowly, Patriot leaders began to lead the militia of backcountry homesteaders to push back the British lines forty miles in six battles in four days. These battles and the events leading up to them will be discussed on June 11.

The Laurens County Museum is free and open to the public.  The exhibit hall is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Memberships are available to those who would like to support the museum.  For more information about this lecture and the many other museum programs, workshops, and exhibits call (864) 681-3678 or visit LaurensCountyMuseum.org or Facebook.
