First Responders from around the nation rally behind Clinton & the Laurens County Fire Service

Posted

City of Clinton officials announced Monday afternoon that the coming home processional would be April 2 for killed in the line of duty firefighter Michael Vinson.

Fire Department public information officer Krystal D. Langston said the procession route would leave Prisma Greenville, travel I-85 to I-385, exit the interstate at Exit 9 and proceed through the Downtown Square in Laurens and on to Kennedy Mortuary.

His funeral is today (April 5).

Clinton Mayor Randy Randall said the city has been “overwhelmed” by the nationwide outpouring of concern and offers of help for the Clinton Fire Department and the Laurens County Fire Service, both of which Vinson served as a firefighter. He died on Sunday - Easter Sunday - as a result of injuries sustained in a fire truck vs car accident at the Springdale Drive - Willard Road intersection in Clinton. Vinson and firefighter Nate Hall were responding to a call for service at a location off I-26. Langston said she could not discuss details of the SC Highway Patrol investigation.

She said Vinson was “well-known and well-liked,” and plans would be developed for a way to honor his legacy as a first responder. Vinson started his Laurens County first response career in 2013 as an Explorer at the Ekom Beach Fire Department, west of Laurens. He came to work for Laurens County in October 2020 and with Clinton in May 2023. He lived at home with his family, and does not have a spouse or children.

Firefighter Hall is recovering at home, Langston said.

Mike Mike, as Vinson was known, was “quiet at first, but he opened up; he was soft-spoken,” Langston said.

Support has come from across the nation and within the community, she said.

The State Fire Marshal is assisting Clinton with the response to Vinson’s death. They are developing a list of the responding departments which provided aid at the accident scene, and with the personnel needs of the Clinton Fire Department and the Laurens County Fire Service.

“This is a sad time in the life of our city,” Mayor Randall said, “with all of our first responders, everyone that’s involved. These folks put their lives on the line every day and we are so thankful for them.

“We send our condolences to the Vinson family. We have been overwhelmed by offers of assistance from all over the state. I’ve gotten mayors from all of our cities and also the Municipal Association, they have all responded and offered any assistance that we might need.

“We so much appreciate that.”
