Hunter is killed; cause and manner of death to be determined

The Laurens County Coroner's Office has issued this statement:

I responded to a hunting death on 4-5-2023 around 6 pm.

The death occurred on Game Management land on Armstrong Rd off of Hwy 252 in Laurens County.

Chief Deputy Patti Canupp identifies the victim as Michael Calvin Keeler Jr 34-year-old male from Waterloo who died at the scene from a gunshot wound.

An autopsy will be performed this am in Greenville. This case is under investigation by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

We are investigating a hunting accident that occurred at about 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, on Cliff Pitts Wildlife Management Area in Laurens County. The accident occurred while two individuals were turkey hunting and left one person deceased. (1 of 2)
