Clemson University Confrontation Highlights Importance of Free Speech Rights Clemson, SC – April 8, 2024 – During the Clemson Spring football game last Saturday, members of the Clemson College Republicans experienced interference while promoting Stewart Jones as the only conservative choice for South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District. University officials initially claimed they students were violating soliciting policies and demanded removal of Stewart Jones campaign materials. |
The Clemson College Republicans, demonstrating a keen grasp of their First Amendment rights, were reported to the Office of Community and Ethical Standards (OCES). Nonetheless, they stood firm in their position and, during a telephone conversation with Vice President of Student Affairs Chris Miller, confirmed that they had not violated any university policies. Statement from Stewart Jones: “I stand with Clemson college Republicans for expressing their political views, and standing firm on their first amendment rights. It is critical that public universities know the importance of respecting the right of political expression. All in all, it was a good day for free speech and Tiger football.” |
