PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The Laurens County Touchdown Club is proud to announce that for week zero, August 18th, the Player of the week is Laurens High School defensive back Travija Austin.

Austin is a senior defensive back and special teams player for the Laurens District High School Raiders and was a bright spot for the Raiders Friday night in their 55 – 9 lost to the Hillcrest Rams.

Travija Austin had an outstanding night for the Raiders on both Defense and Special Teams.  Austin had a pick six for a touchdown of over 50 yards for the Raiders and had three solo tackles and one assist.  He covered extremely well from his safety position all night and played well on kickoffs and punt special teams as well.  Head Coach Daryl Smith stated, “Travija Austin is an outstanding young man and a hard worker.  He is a very physical tackler with outstanding speed.  He has also grown into one of our leaders on defense this year.”

The Laurens County Touchdown Club will honor Travija on August 24th at the first Touchdown Club meeting of the year.  The meeting will be at noon at The Ridge in Laurens with Lakeview BBQ serving the meal and the food service line opening at 11:45 am.  Player of the Week awards will presented in 2023 by Farm Bureau Insurance of Laurens County.

The August 24th meeting will feature the four High School Head Football Coaches from Laurens County in Laurens District High School Head Coach Daryl Smith; Clinton High Head Coach Corey Fountain and new Laurens Academy Head Football Coach Jolly Doolittle and new Thornwell Charter School Head Coach Charlie Washington.  Thornwell Charter School will play varsity football this year after an 18 year absence.

The Laurens County Touchdown Club meets every other Thursday throughout the football season at The Ridge located in Laurens at 301 Exchange Road and the public is invited.  Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15. All meetings are at Noon with the food service line opening at 11:45 am.

The featured speaker for the second TD Club meeting on Thursday, September 7th will be Presbyterian College Head Football Coach Steve Englehart.  Coach Englehart begins his second year at PC.  Additionally, the Farm Bureau Insurance‘Player of the Week’awards will be presented for the August 25 and September 1 High School football games.

On behalf of the Touchdown Club Board of Directors, I would like to thank each of you for your support.  Congratulations to Player of the Week Travija Austin of Laurens District High School.
