Laurens County Council starts prior-to-speaking registration

Posted

For the first time, people who want to make public comments to the Laurens County Council at the council meetings must sign up in advance, beginning with this Tuesday’s meeting.

The Jan. 12 meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers, second floor of the historic courthouse in downtown Laurens. The public comments portion of the meeting will begin at 6 p.m.

People who know they will want to speak to the council must sign up prior to the meeting, and are not to exceed 5 minutes per topic - 15 minutes total public comments time.

Following public comments, there will be comments from council members, and a closed to the public executive session to discuss an employment matter and a legal briefing (in accordance with provisions of the SC Freedom of Information Act).

Prior to the public comments time, the council will consider:

--public hearing and third (final) reading of an ordinance/agreement with D&W Fine Pack;

--presentation by Pastor Wayne Jones and Joe Gresham on Set Free To Be Ministries Inc.;

--second reading of ordinance/agreement with Emitec Inc.;

--second reading of ordinance to acquire and transfer real estate for an economic development project (Clinton);

--second reading of ordinance to transfer real estate for relocated trash collection facility (Gray Court);

--first reading of ordinance/agreement related to Octagon Industrial Park and D&W Fine Pack;

--first reading of ordinance to exchange and transfer property (Laurens);

--AFG Grant request for reimbursement, Laurens County Fire Service and Durbin Creek Volunteer Fire Department;

--administrative report.

The next scheduled Laurens County Council meetings are Feb. 9 and March 8 (5:30 p.m.). Dates held open for other Council meetings are Jan. 26, Feb. 23 and March 22.

Laurens County Council used to not require public comments prior registration; Chairman Joe Wood announced last month that policy was being changed, effective in January.
