COLUMBIA – In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, South Carolina ETV and Public Radio (SCETV) is committed to fostering understanding, support and dialogue around mental health. Throughout May, SCETV will feature a range of programming and digital resources aimed at increasing awareness and encouraging meaningful conversations on mental well-being.
SC Public Radio’s Health Focus, which airs Monday through Thursday throughout the day, is produced in collaboration with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and encourages listeners to embrace mental health treatment. Host Bobbi Conner leads discussions with experts, including Dr. Tracy Stecker, a psychologist and researcher at MUSC, who focuses on help-seeking behaviors among individuals with mental health conditions.
Teachable Moments, hosted by Dr. Rénard Harris from the College of Charleston, airs on SC Public Radio every Friday during Morning Edition and All Things Considered. The program provides valuable educational insights for students and parents and explores the rise in adolescent mental health issues, emphasizing the importance of awareness, early intervention and accessible support.
Additionally, SCETV’s digital platform offers a curated selection of episodes from Tell Me More with Kelly Corrigan, a series that inspires and educates through engaging conversations. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, key episodes include “Sleep Your Way Well,” “Bad Days, Tough Seasons or Clinical Depression,” and a discussion with Deborah Blalock, one of South Carolina’s leading mental health administrators and advocates.
SCETV also continues its commitment to youth mental health through in-depth reporting on school-based mental health services. These stories highlight the importance of accessible care for students, the removal of barriers to mental health services and the positive impact these resources have on students' overall well-being. As part of this commitment, SCETV Safe Space presents a new episode titled "Never Alone," which delves into the impact of bullying and the profound grief experienced by families affected by tragic losses. This episode features personal stories, expert insights and valuable resources to promote a more supportive community and help those in need.
As part of its mission to support the well-being of South Carolinians, SCETV remains dedicated to providing high-quality content and information that fosters dialogue and encourages proactive approaches to mental health. Throughout May and beyond, SCETV invites audiences to engage with its programming and utilize its digital resources to help create a more informed and compassionate community.
