LAURENS, SC – June 14, 2025 — While protests and rallies unfolded across the country under the banner of “No Kings,” the people of Laurens chose a different way to celebrate freedom—through unity, reflection, and joy. Downtown Laurens was filled with vibrant energy on Saturday as the community gathered for its annual Juneteenth Celebration, a day honoring the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and the resilience of Black history and culture.
The day began with the 4th Annual Juneteenth Breakfast Conference, held at the Laurens County Museum. The event was led by Dr. Lacresha Byrd, Assistant Superintendent of Union County Schools, who served as emcee for the morning. Mayor Nathan Senn offered a few brief words to the crowd in attendance, and Rev. Dr. Sadie Goldsmith opened the gathering in prayer. Eric Haylock delivered a stirring spoken word performance that reflected the spirit of liberation, and keynote speaker Dr. Booker Ingram, Professor of Political Science at Presbyterian College, delivered a moving address on the legacy of Juneteenth and the ongoing pursuit of justice.
Following the breakfast, the celebration took to the streets with a colorful and lively Juneteenth Parade. Onlookers were treated to a procession of classic cars, youth dressed as iconic Black historical figures, and appearances from community leaders. The parade served as a living tribute to Black excellence, past and present.
As the last float rolled through, the celebration transitioned into a full festival on the Square in downtown Laurens. The streets were lined with vendors offering everything from delicious BBQ to educational exhibits, including a booth from the Palmetto Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers. Families enjoyed music, food, crafts, and cultural displays in a festival atmosphere that was both festive and deeply meaningful.
A major highlight of the afternoon was a performance by two-time Grammy Award nominee and gospel music sensation James Fortune, who brought the crowd to its feet with a soul-stirring set. His appearance added star power to a celebration already filled with heart and heritage.
From the solemn moments of the morning’s conference to the joyful energy of the festival and concert, Laurens’ Juneteenth Celebration offered the community a powerful way to reclaim the past, honor Black voices, and inspire hope for the future.
