LAURENS -- Walking up the steps of the Laurens County Clemson Extension office, you might have caught the warm aroma of vanilla, sugar, and imagination wafting through the air. From June 17–19, young bakers aged 9 to 13 gathered for The Great Laurens County Bake-Off 4-H Day Camp; a three-day culinary adventure inspired by the beloved show The Great British Bake Off.
Led by Laurens County 4-H Youth Development Agent, Lauren Smith, the camp served up more than just sweet treats. It was a hands-on learning experience where kids explored the art (and science) of baking; from measuring flour to mastering decoration techniques.
According to Lauren, “They have been working very hard every day.” The group even embraced an unofficial motto along the way: “It’s all about trial, error, and delicious cake!” A perfect summary of the laughter, learning, and occasional mess that filled the kitchen over the three-day camp.
On day one, the budding bakers kicked things off with cookies, choosing their own recipes and flavors to customize their creations. Chocolate chips, M&Ms, and delicious combinations made for a fun and flavorful start as kids got comfortable mixing, scooping, and baking on their own terms.
By day two, it was time for a true baking test, a technical challenge as the official start to their Show Stopper cakes. With very basic instructions, like simply “Mix,” participants had to think critically, communicate effectively, and apply what they had learned so far to begin baking their one-of-a-kind cakes. Each team brought their own flair and ideas, making each cake as unique as the bakers behind it.
Day three was the grand finale. After all their hard work, it was time to bring their creations to life with frosting, sprinkles, and fondant. Each group carefully decorated their cakes, transforming simple layers into imaginative works of edible art. Finally, the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived, the presentation and tasting.
When asked about their favorite part of baking, Gracelyn said, “When you get to taste the dessert, and see how your creation turns out!” Levi added, “I really like designing the cake, designing it to what you like.”
Another group found joy in different parts of the process. “I’ve been baking since I was young,” said Savanna, while Hailey shared that she enjoyed it because, “It’s relaxing.” As for their design inspiration? The group laughed and explained, “I don’t know, I just said we should do something like Barney… THIS IS Barney, and the cake is perfect!”
From flour-dusted aprons to brightly frosted creations, these young bakers proved that with a little patience, a lot of heart, and a dash of imagination, something truly special can rise. The Great Laurens County Bake-Off wasn’t just a camp, it was a joyful celebration of creativity, confidence, and cake.
And yes, every bite was as amazing as the creativity behind it!
