Red Devils are All-Laurens County

Football season celebrated at Touchdown Club's annual dinner
Be competitive in the classroom as well as on the football field. Always remember the legacy that you carry and the power that you have." - Travelle Wharton, Hillcrest High School, University of South Carolina, Carolina Panthers (2004-11 and 2013) and Cincinnati Bengal offensive lineman

The Clinton Red Devils are well-represented on the All-Laurens County Football Team announced tonight by the Laurens County Touchdown Club.

At the season-ending dinner, players, coaches, parents and fans of high school football in Laurens County heard an inspirational talk by former Gamecock, Carolina Panther and Cincinnati Bengal, and Hillcrest High School (Simpsonville) standout Travelle Wharton. His cousin, Rev. Stephen Evans of Clinton, introduced Wharton for the keynote talk.

Chris Liner, Laurens District High School football head coach, was named the Laurens County Touchdown Club Coach of the Year, for guiding the Raiders to a 6-6 record, second round appearance in the Class 5A State Playoffs, Region Championship and back-to-back wins over Greenwood for the first time in 20 years. Liner's offensive lineman Hunter Medlin was named the Laurens County Player of the Year. Medlin is in Myrtle Beach preparing for the North-South All-Star Game this weekend.

Several Red Devil honorees couldn't make it to the dinner, at The Ridge recreation complex in Laurens, because they were playing varsity boys basketball. The 3-1 Red Devils beat Chapin, 67-40, in home action tonight. Clinton quarterback Charlie Craven was the Red Devils nominee for County Player of the Year, along with Laurens' Medlin and Laurens Academy's Johnathan Burns. Clinton players named to the All-County Team (nominated by coaches) are:

-- Zac Ray, offensive line;

-- Jishon Payne, offensive line;

-- Donte Reeder, wide receiver;

-- Aaron Copeland, wide receiver;

-- Charlie Craven, quarterback;

-- Tyreke Watts, defensive line;

-- Tashymen Boyd, linebacker;

-- Zikail Livingston, linebacker;

-- Mark Wise, defensive back;

-- Sincere Hunt, defensive back;

-- Elvis Fitz, special teams.

Clinton High football head coach Andrew Webb, as well as Liner and Laurens Academy head coach Todd Kirk, thanked the Touchdown Club for its every other week (8 meetings) recognition of high school football players in Laurens County. "We were 5-6 this season, We are proud of our accomplishments and strides we made this year. Success is in the journey, not the destination," Webb said. "Two years ago we were 3-7 and never had a lead at halftime. This season, in all five conference games, we went into halftime with a lead. We start to work in January, working on our 2017 team."
