Blue Hose Volleyball Sweeps Gardner-Webb in Three Sets
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Presbyterian College volleyball hit over .300 in two of three sets to take a 3-0 sweep over Gardner-Webb Friday afternoon in Boiling Springs, N.C. PC took the sets by scores of 25-18, 25-13, and 25-21. The Blue Hose were led by Sierra Davis with 14 kills.
How it Happened
The Blue Hose hit .359 in the first set, helping them turn a 9-9 tie into a 19-13 lead, off the 10-4 run, highlighted by multiple kills from Sierra Davis and Erin Eulitz, who finished with five and six kills in the set, respectively. PC continued its dominance, building a 24-15 lead before GWU rallied with three straight to make it 24-18. Davis stopped the Runnin’ Bulldogs momentum with a kill to give the Blue Hose the 25-18 win.
Gardner-Webb came out of the first intermission on a roll, taking a 4-1 lead before PC came back with three unanswered to tied the second set at 4-4. Four kills and service ace by GWU made it a multiple point margin again at 9-4. PC fought back inch by inch, tying the set at 12-12 off an 8-3 run, capped by two kills from Samantha Del Toro and Martina Shamley. Tied again at 15-15, PC rattled off two straight to take a 17-15 lead. A back and forth battle ensued with neither team able to get a solid foothold. Tied 22-22, PC was able to take the next three of four points, including two kills from Davis, to take the 25-23 set two win.
The entire third set was close with Gardner-Webb able to take a 10-7 lead off back to back PC attack errors. PC clawed back to an 11-11 tied, helped by two straight kills from Davis. The tie was the first of five ties, the last at 18-18 off a Eulitz kill. It ignited a 3-0 run, that included an ace by Daley Gosnell, to give PC a 21-18 lead. PC hit match point at 24-20 off a Sara Rogers’ kill before a service ace made it 24-21. Davis came back with a kill to seal the 25-21 third set and match win.
Player of the Match
Four Blue Hose posted double-digit kills, marking the first time since Sept. 26, 2014, a span of 60 matches, PC has accomplished the feat. Sierra Davis led the effort with 14 kills, followed by Martina Shamley with her career-high 11 kills. Samantha Del Toro and Erin Eulitz posted 10 kills apiece with Eulitz recording her second straight double-double with 14 digs. Mikayla Register tied her career-best with 27 digs. Sara Rogers added her eighth career 40+ assists match with 41 assists.
Hannah Driscoll led Gardner-Webb with 11 kills. Amanda Sahm added 24 assists, with Emma Milstead posting 19 digs.
Stats of the Match
PC finished with a .265 hitting percentage, compared to .133 for Gardner-Webb. The Blue Hose posted eight less errors, 8-12, and had one more ace, 5-4. The Blue Hose hit. 359 in the first set, and .304 in the second, totaling just six errors in those two sets combined.
The 27 digs by Register ranks first in PC’s Division I match record book, with Davis’ 45 attempts is teid for second. The 41 assists by Rogers ranks third, as does the team’s 66 digs and 48 total kills. The 136 total attempts ranks fourth, and the 45 total assists sitting at fifth.
PC improves to 3-14 overall and 1-2 in the Big South, while GWU drops to 10-7, 1-2.
