Clinton High varsity baseball starts its longest stretch of home cooking since February on Monday, facing the Laurens Raiders at The Sponge.

The Red Devils are undefeated, 14-0, and standing at 7-0 in region play having a chance to wrap up an undefeated region slate and a top seed going into the playoffs.

Clinton’s varsity will play at home Monday against Laurens, Tuesday against Chester (region), April 14 against Abbeville and April 19 against Union County (region).

Road action for the Red Devils was Wednesday night at Lancaster (8-1 region win), and will be April 21 at Ninety Six and, regular season finale, April 22 at South Pointe (region). 

Clinton defeated Laurens, 2-1, March 17 in the continuation of a game delayed by lightning.

Laurens (13-4) lost last Saturday night to Emerald, 14-13, in the championship game of the Green Wave Invitational at Easley. Earlier Saturday, Laurens defeated Science Hill, Tenn., 8-4, to advance in the tournament. Laurens lost 5-1 to Greenville Tuesday, and stands at 6-2 in Region I-4A.

Raider standout Thomas Jones has signed to play collegiate baseball at Vanderbilt. Clinton pitcher/first baseman Davis Cunningham and catcher Chandler Todd have signed to play baseball at Erskine College.

In the Red Devils’ March 25 game at Broome, Clinton won 3-0 with Cunningham pitching a complete game and striking out 12 Centurion batters. Brayden Gibbs collected three hits and Todd had two against region opponent Broome.

In the April 6 game at Lancaster, Cunningham was the complete game winner again, with eight strikeouts. Gibbs recorded three hits and two RBIs with JP Duncan getting two hits and two RBIs.

The Red Devil JV joins the varsity for games against Laurens, Chester and Union County. JV play will begin at 4:30 p.m. against Laurens (varsity at 7:30), and 5 p.m. against Chester and Union County (varsity at 7:30). JV baseball combines with the C-Team for a doubleheader on April 13 - a make-up from Saturday when the games were postponed because of wet field conditions. C-Team action is at 5 p.m., JV action at 7.

All Clinton High baseball games are played at The Sponge, adjacent to Wilder Stadium, at the North Adair Street athletic complex. Next season, varsity action moves to a new baseball/softball complex under construction at Clinton High School.
