Publisher: Albums to listen to during a pandemic or anytime

By Brian Whitmore/Publisher

During a pandemic we get bored and turn to Facebook and start doing top 10 lists. Last month, we looked at my top 10 movies. This month we look at my top 10 albums, covering multiple genres.

Top 10 albums

1. Tom Petty: An American Treasure. Every song is a classic. Tom Petty didn’t have the look of a rocker, but he rocked.

Favorite song – Southern Accent (written by Johnny Cash):

We have our own way of livin'

But everything is done

With a southern accent

Where I come from

2. The Definitive Lynyrd Skynyrd Collection. Again, every song is a classic. Skynyrd is Southern Rock. Skynyrd is the soundtrack to being Southern.

Favorite song —  Gimme Back My Bullets (Lynyrd Skynyrd – a message to  Billboard about how they chart music – No.1 with a bullet):

But I'm leavin' this game one step ahead of you

And you will not hear me cry 'cause I do not sing the blues

3. John Anderson: Seminole Wind. A comeback album for a country great that deserves his due.

Favorite song — When it comes to you (John Anderson):

You only get one life,

and this I know.

I want to get my licks

in now before I go.

4. Alan Jackson: Under the Influence. One of my father’s favorite albums and mine. Jackson revises country classics by numerous legends. My father’s favorite was Nat Stuckey’s “Pop a Top.”

My favorite — The Way I Am (Merle Haggard):

Some would run, ah, but that ain't like me

So I just dream and keep on bein' the way I am

5. O Brother, Where Art Thou? Old-time music from the movie and bluegrass is front and center.

Favorite song — Angel Band (The Stanley Brothers):

O bear my longing heart to Him who bled & died for me

Whose blood now cleanses from all sin and gives me victory

6. Metallica: Black Album. Sometimes you just have to rock. Sometimes metal is the way to go.

Favorite song — The Unforgiven (Metallica):

They dedicate their lives

To running all of his

He tries to please them all

This bitter man he is

Throughout his life the same

He's battled constantly

This fight he cannot win

A tired man they see no longer cares

7. Third Day: Chronology 1 & 2. Christian Southern Rock – what’s not to like.

Favorite song — Consuming Fire (Third Day):

And yes our God, he is a consuming fire

And the flames burn down deep in my soul

Yes, our God, he is a consuming fire

He reaches inside and he melts down this cold heart of stone

8. Matthew West: Something to Say. Best songwriter out there.

Favorite song — The Motions:

I don't wanna go through the motions

I don't wanna go one more day

Without Your all consuming passion inside of me

I don't wanna spend my whole life asking,

What if I had given everything,

Instead of going through the motions?

9. Diamond Rio. My favorite country group, edging out Blackhawk and Dessert Rose Band with this awesome country album.

Favorite song — Mirror, Mirror (Diamond Rio):

Spent most of the morning laying in bed

Lunch was a black coffee

And three cigarettes

They say it will kill me,

But I've got a hunch

That this broken heart's

Gonna beat 'em to the punch

10. The Gospel Side of Dailey & Vincent. The rock stars of bluegrass show their gospel side.

Favorite song — Noah Found Grace in the Eyes of the Lord (Dailey & Vincent):

“Well, the Lord looked down from His window in the sky and said

I created man but I don’t remember why

Nothin’ but fightin’ since creation day

I’ll send a little water and I’ll wash ‘em all away.

So the Lord came down to look around a spell

And there He found Noah behavin’ mighty well

And that is the reason the Scriptures record

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

Music has a way of helping us forget the current state of the world.
