My Goal As Editor

I cover this town.
I’m interested in things that happen in Laurens, sure. I cover the Laurens County Council because, supposedly, it’s for all the county. Although, the county hasn’t helped us in Clinton hardly at all. We have spec buildings — they’re ours. We have a rec complex coming — it’s ours.
And there’s nothing wrong with that.
Clinton needs to be self-sufficient.
The Chronicle needs to be dedicated to promoting public comment and in-put about things happening in Clinton.
County organizations send us your news. I will attend your events when they mesh with my schedule. But to Clinton, I say - “You are my focus.”
Every day when I drive in to work — you are my focus. Tell me what you want.
A good friend called just the other day to gently nudge me in the direction of a story done by another media source; the story had a Clinton connection. I love that. I had it on my calendar to attend the event my friend was referencing — you can see it on our Spotlight Page today — and I didn’t even tell my friend that. “Oh, I already planned to go” was right on my lips, I didn’t even say it. People give me their ideas, they don’t need to hear, “Already thought about that.” I can’t stand “one-up-manship.”
We make decisions every day about news coverage (and by we, I mean Brian Whitmore and I) and, you know, that is what makes newspapers such a great business — collaboration.
If I miss anything about working for a daily, it’s the daily budget meetings. Just like a budget for your household, a newspaper budget is the listing of stories that are “get-able” for the next issue — you are a lot more specialized on a daily. Me? I’m a jack of all trades. Editorialist. Photographer. Reporter.
I have done pagination, I don’t do that here. I don’t handle the money, my bosses know, I’m lousy with finance. I handle the website. I handle Facebook. I don’t tweet.
I want Clinton to grow and thrive and succeed. I want more of our businesses to know what a great bargain we are to advertise with; and if you join together with us in a partnership, we can put your message out all over the world. We’re not just print — we are the future.
So, join us on a great ride. We will have bumps. We can agree to disagree. We are Clinton, let’s go forward.
My renewed commitment is to bring you the best newspaper around.
