LETTER: One mistake, then another

The Editor,

Mike Pitts said he made a huge mistake in attempting the consolidation of District 55 and 56 school system. He even made a much, more expense mistake in regards to the future liabilities of the taxpayers of Laurens County.

He, with no input from the public taxpayers or the County Council, provided $900,000 "obligating" the county to build an EMS, Fire, and sheriff's station on property donated by ZF Transmission. The major problem arises, which has not been discussed, in the start up cost and the operational cost to the taxpayers. This expense is a lasting tax liability that we, the taxpayers, cannot afford at this juncture of time.

The equipment, such as, one EMS box unit, a fire truck, and several sheriffs vehicles plus 7 new county employees and the utilities, would run into hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. This multi station was never in the planning stages of the county council. The county taxpayers of Laurens County will be saddled with these expenses for ever and a day. Mike Pitts should rescend this demand and allow the county planning committee to determine how this "gift" should be utilized in the improvement of county services. The county council could (and should) excise their authority in this matter.

Mike Pitts and I (Jay Weisner) voted 20 years ago to establish a EMS station in the Hickory Tavern community . This was a need for a station then, and more so today. The public should be aware that another EMS station would relieve the pressure and improve the overall response time for all units (communities).

As reported, the age of the Laurens County constituents has increased over the past years and this service ( EMS) may be the most desired.
