LETTER: City officials need to call down attacks

The Editor,

How can an elected official (a female) be verbally attacked by a male at a public city council meeting and no one intervenes or attempts to stop the verbal attack?

I, Shirley Y. Jenkins was re-elected to Clinton City Council on March 5, 2019 with 57.3% of the overall vote, which was a disappointment to several, who were trying to unseat me.  Since that election, I have been verbally attacked and harassed on several occasions to include the latest incident that took place on April 1, 2019 at our regular city council meeting.    I ran for this office because I believe in the City of Clinton.  This is my home and will always be my home.  I love this city and want what is best for every citizen in our community.  It is not about me or the salary ($300 monthly minus taxes); it’s about trying to please the people while improving our city and balancing the city budget.

I am fully aware that I do not have the support of a few of our city council members and/or administration, but I was elected by the people of my ward and will be treated with respect.  I truly believe in honesty and fairness.  I show respect to others and would appreciate the same respect being shown to me regardless if you are pleased with my re-election or not.  It is interesting to watch our city officials (Bob McLean Mayor; Bill Cannon, City Manager; Allen Wham, City Attorney and Sonny Ledda, Police Chief) remain silent and allow me, their colleague, be verbally attacked during our public city council meeting and not intervene.  What does this teach our children, our young adults as well as our guests, who were in attendance during this outburst and rant?  We are trying to improve the economic growth of our city, but what kind of image are we presenting to those who are watching us?  We have a lot to accomplish and should work together as a team, whether we agree or not, for the betterment of our city!

It’s about all of us, not one or two!

Shirley Y. Jenkins
Clinton City Council Member, Ward 2
