Food for thought

If my monthly articles are to reflect community consciousness, I truly hope the community is aware of a blessing from School District 56.  If you did not know, I am the proud father of four beautiful daughters who keep me and my wonderful wife busy.

Many residents often see us in a grocery store restocking sustenance for Team Evans. Food, especially nutritious food, is expensive. That is why I am glad there is a community garden across the street from Friendship AME Church. That was just a quick commercial for the Clinton Community Garden project.

While my wife is working, I have the summer task of having my daughters with me at the office, in addition to running shuttle service to practice and other summer activities. Traditionally, I could take time to create a great Food Network worthy dish that is plated to rival a masterpiece from Picasso, or I could grab a quasi-healthy dish from a local chain that may temporarily fill stomachs, but quickly empty pockets. What? Is there a third option?

The School District 56 phone tree unveiled a third option via the voice of Dr. David O’Shields that could have easily been Gene Wilder’s in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.  “Steve, you have lost your mind.”  I almost did when I realized that for $3.55 per day, I can feed five people lunch!

Children 18 years and under eat free, and adults only have to pay $3.55.  For $14.20, my daughters and I can eat lunch Monday through Thursday during the summer.  For $14.20, I get 20 lunches a week!

All I have to do is show up at Clinton High School or MS Bailey, Monday through Thursday, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. with $3.55 in hand. That is better than Charlie’s golden ticket, and the food is delicious!

Thank you, School District 56, and especially the Food Service staff. You have not only provided a very cost beneficial opportunity for families. But you have created an atmosphere where families and friends fellowship over a meal. This is a great example of Clinton caring.
