Publisher: Albums to listen to during a pandemic or anytime

By Brian Whitmore/Publisher

During a pandemic we get bored and turn to Facebook and start doing top 10 lists. Last month, we looked at my top 10 movies. This month we look at my top 10 albums, covering multiple genres.

Top 10 albums

1. Tom Petty: An American Treasure. Every song is a classic. Tom Petty didn’t have the look of a rocker, but he rocked.

Favorite song – Southern Accent (written by Johnny Cash):

We have our own way of livin'

But everything is done

Publisher: Trying to teach life lessons

Being a parent is not easy.

Being a parent without the help of support structures like school and church is harder.

I’ve tried to keep things normal during COVID-19.

My daughter has a new kitten, Diego, which has helped.

And we purchased an inflatable pool. It measures 10x30 and holds 1,700 gallons of water.

It’s more of a swimming hole than a pool, but it’s all a 7-year-old needs.

We’ll my daughter decided to take Diego for a swim and his claws punctured the inflatable ring atop the pool.

Editorial: We need Jesus

A pandemic and racial unrest are tearing the United States and the world apart.
But despite all the bad news in the world, we have Good News and that Good News has a name — Jesus Christ.
The justice and judgment we seek comes from God.
He is in control. Judgement is His job, not ours.
For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body. - 2 Corinthians 5:10
We must put our hope in Jesus. He will work things out for our best.

Publisher: Movies to watch during a pandemic or anytime

By Brian Whitmore
When people get bored during a pandemic they turn to social media. And recently, they’ve started posting their top 10 albums and top 10 movies. I figured that would make two good columns. So, here are my top 10 movies, just for fun …
1. Star Wars. Released in 1977, George Lucas’ space opera defines my childhood. As an adult, it is classic escapism. It takes me back to my childhood. I can leave all my troubles behind and return to a simpler time when I go to a galaxy far, far away.

Our rights can’t be thrown out due to COVID-19

By Brian Whitmore/Publisher

The Declaration of Independence recognizes three unalienable rights given to humans by their creator, which are to be protected by government — life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Obviously, you can’t have liberty and pursuit of happiness without life. But also note that life without liberty and the pursuit of happiness is really no life at all.

Fried chicken lovers: Can I get a witness?

By Brian Whitmore
I’m not sure you can be an American and not like chicken. I’m not sure you can be southern and not like Fried Chicken.
Simmer down vegetarians.
Last Wednesday, I drove to Swainsboro, Ga., to work on The Chronicle’s budget for next fiscal year.
Truth is there is not much between Clinton and Swainsboro, traveling down Hwy. 221.

Brian - Laurens County adventure

It’s official, my family and I are enjoying the Yak Life.

The week of Easter, I purchased kayaks for the family and this past weekend was the maiden voyage, a trip to Boyd’s Mill Pond on both Saturday and Sunday.

It was a family adventure and we didn’t have to leave Laurens County.

We had a blast. My daughter, Lydia, really took to kayaking quickly.

My goal, as publisher

By Brian Whitmore
It’s been a year since I took over as publisher of The Clinton Chronicle.
What do publishers do? Most everything.
In addition to managing, I do all the composition work — layout, ad design. Pretty much, I bring it all together and watch the bottom line.
My most important job is to keep the doors open for the families of my employees and for the people of our community.
